Sowon Kwon

Sowon Kwon was born in Korea and is based in New York City. She works in a range of media including sculptural and video installations, digital animation, drawing, and printmaking. Her recent work explores portraiture, perception, and historical memory as our bodies are increasingly submitted to and made (in)accessible through technology.

She has had solo exhibitions at The Kitchen, The Berkeley Art Museum at the University of California in Berkeley, and The Whitney Museum at Philip Morris (now Altria). Her works have also been featured in group exhibitions at Artist Space, The Drawing Center, The New Museum of Contemporary Art, ICA Boston, The Queens Museum, and The Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, as well as internationally at the Third Kwangju Biennale in Korea and the Yokohama Triennale in Japan. She is a recipient of a Media Arts Residency Award at the Wexner Center for the Arts in Columbus, OH, with which she is exploring motion capture technology, and in the summer of 2008 she participated in an artist residency at San Art in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.
