Kathi Appelt

Kathi Appelt is the author of over thirty books for readers of all ages. Her picture book Bubba and Beau, Best Friends, was given the Irma and Simon Black Award for Distinguished Children’s Literature in 2003 by Bank Street College. Where, Where Is Swamp Bear? (HarperCollins) was chosen for the Texas Institute of Letters “Best Children’s Book” award in 2002. Kissing Tennessee, a collection of short stories for teenagers, was named a Best Book for Young Adults and a Quick Pick for Reluctant Readers by the American Library Association. Poems from Home Room: A Writer’s Place to Start was chosen as a Top Ten Book of Poetry by Booklist Magazine. Miss Lady Bird's Wildflowers, a picture book biography of Lady Bird Johnson, won the Writer's League of Texas "Teddy Award." My Father's Summers, a memoir written in prose poems, was a PEN finalist as well as the winner of the Paterson Poetry Prize for YA Literature in 2006. Her first novel, The Underneath, published by Atheneum (2008), was a finalist for the National Book Award in 2008 and was given a Newbery Honor Award in 2009. She and her husband Ken live in College Station, TX, with their four cats.
