VCFA faculty member Alan Cumyn's book Dear Sylvia wins award

Just in from VCFA MFA in Writing for Children & Young Adults faculty member Alan Cumyn: "My little book Dear Sylvia has won the Silver Birch Express award as voted on by thousands of school kids in Ontario.

The awards ceremony at Harbourfront was wild -- banners, bright lights, ten of us authors sitting on stage with banners high, kids whipped into a frenzy. The book signing session afterwards was just about the most intense hour I have spent so far as a professional writer. Fortunately there was crowd control, otherwise things might have gotten ugly when time began to run out and my hand started to fall off... It is very true, no one loves your book like a nine-year-old can."

Points of View

"As a recent graduate of VCFA's MFA program and the post-graduate Picture Book Certificate Program, I can say that I have never looked back. In addition to the knowledge and life-long friendships I've gained as a result of my Vermont College experience, I've seen remarkable growth in my ability to teach the craft of writing to students. Without a doubt, Vermont College of Fine Arts' MFA program has made me a better writer and a better teacher."
